I've heard of people doing this to themselves before ... especially on the Internet ... but it's usually done with a jawbone ... not a gun ...

Sorry, I don't believe it happened the way it was reported.

Dropping a modern gun will not cause it to discharge. One's finger must pull the trigger or one must other wise drop the hammer, as in carelessly uncocking a revolver.

If Nunn had previously assaulted Leatherman such that Leatherman decided it was a good idea to get a gun, why did Nunn participate in taking Leatherman to the hospital? ... Unless just to add insult to injury..., which seems unlikely under the circumstances.
 
A more likely situation is that he dropped or started to drop it and grabbed for it, causing the discharge.
