I have nothing against buying online, but ...

You have adds for 2 online shops as your signature. I'm guessing the only reason you ever went to the LDS was for air. Air isn't enough business to keep a shop open.

I hadn't noticed that, so another internet supporter saving a few bucks on gear and now he gets to spend that savings on fuel.

Awesome, maybe the shop 45 minutes away will close too since the ONLY reason to visit is for air.

Please stop crucifying the guy for wondering where to get air, there are many reasons the shop could have closed, but capitalism tells us that when a shop closes it is usually for the better good inthe long run, as consumers typically support the good shops. I'm sure we can find this guy somewhere to get air!

Maybe he should have put this local shop in his signature instead of the online hacks?

There are a number of options for the serious divers who don't want to support a bad LDS with high prices or poor customer service. You just have to put some effort into it. It would only take a small number of divers who purchase their gear at readily available discounts to put some of their savings into something like this:

POSEIDON 5000PSI AIR COMPRESSOR - eBay (item 110241458071 end time Apr-15-08 07:57:37 PDT)

only 3000 dollars, still way ahead of shopping at a dive shop right?

In Hang Gliding, one person or a group of HG Pilots would share in the cost of a pay out winch trailer for flat land flying. Also share the storage costs for the trailer as well. You need to get your buddies together to share the costs of a compressor. Also need to follow up on the earlier comment and find out where the various Fire Departments are getting their air from.

One person, not on $$$ but still better than being dependent on a bad LDS.

But as little as 3 divers could save $1000 each by purchasing gear from discount sellers rather than a high priced local shop.

Put 5 - 10 divers together, and it's a easy savings.

Clearly, it is best for all local divers (and the shop) to have a good, competitive LDS reasonably accessible. But many shops subscribe to the dip'm and rip'm business model that are designed to separate the new diver from his $$$ before he realizes what is going on and also try to keep the more experienced divers in line with scare tactics that you are familiar with.

The "online hacks" are not the real threat to good LDSs. The bad LDSs are the real threat as they suck business away from the good one and end up pissing off newer divers as they learn what is going on.

You shop owners (Al) need to take a chill.

That is so true! After enough bad experiences with a "bad LDS" the customer eventually becomes a primarily online customer only. The good LDS's never even get a chance after that.
