I assume you're referring to the scores of killings that have taken place in Cozumel recently. Oh, wait, right. There haven't been any. Duh. :shakehead:

Why are you folks even questioning JimLap's post? He's simply acknowledging his fears (many people, not just him, have unjustified/unfounded fears) that any potential robber would choose him as their next victim, and that when he is unarmed he's an "easy target." I think he should be commended for knowing he's weak and living his life accordingly. Good for you JimLap!
By seeing yourself as a victim, youre more likely to become one because people will pick up on your worries/fears..

Personally i DO take some caution in what Im doing and where Im going, but Ill do my best never to come across as an easy target, armed or unarmed..

And for the record..
Pulling out a knife if you get mugged is likely to be the last thing you want to do anyways considering youre already one step behind. Id rather let the bastard run away with my 200 pesos than try pulling out a knife myself and get stabbed in the process..
Not that its gonna happen, but its a helluvalot better to lose 200 pesos than the rest of my vacation (or worse)

I've never had anyone directly rob me anywhere, but even in college karate classes I was taught to use my lessons to create a window to run like hell. I just like wearing pieces of my knife collection, something of an outdoors man tradition I suppose even tho not all do wear belt knives, we all do carry pocknet knives around here - very handy tools from cutting young bulls to watermelons. :eyebrow:

10 years ago, I'd board planes wearing a 4" lockblade knife leaving Texas altho I usually had to put it in checked bags in other states or countries on return. I was probly lucky to not have been busted in my ignorance in my Caribbean travels then. Now, I wear a cheap knife to the farms, a nice US made one shopping, but just pack one traveling. Even Texas cities have become funny about such as compared to here locally where it's fine to have a shotgun in the pickup seat when going thru a bank's drive thru.

I think it's common for people who may have never been to a foreign location to have little reality to their impression. Before I visited The Netherlands I expected everyone to wear wooden shoes (saw one pair in a week), and before my first trip to Cozumel I had visions from my last trip to Juarez. :shocked2: "It's Mexico - cover me, dude."

You people take stuff way to seriously! First of all I would never think of pulling a knife on an armed robber. That's just dumb. Unarmed-well that's different. Second I make it a practice to avoid any places, situations, or events where the possibility of trouble is likely.

And there is no reason I can see that I would travel to Mexico anyway. I know of no diving there that interests me. How many divable wrecks are there? And lastly my remarks implying no knives being weird comes not from needing one on a dive( shears work fine) it's from never having been without a knife in my pocket since the age of 6 when my grandfather gave me my first whittling blade. Hell I do indeed feel naked without at least one on me at all times.

From grade school on I and most of my friends had a knife of some kind on us at all times. Of course we were not video game couch taters either we used our knives all the time when outside. But unfounded fears about being unarmed are not always unfounded. Having been a victim twice I've made the decision to never be that again.

It does have the benefit of protecting the locals. Especially ones who would rob you. Unarmed = easy target. I'll stay out of Mexico I think.

OMG..........:rofl3:
guess I should pack my 9 the next time I go to Cozumel......its really a dangerous place these days.

My wife, my stepdaughter, my three grandkids where sitting in the backyard the other day. Suddenly a young man leaps the 7ft fence, 5 seconds later a man dressed in black battle gear(S.W.A.T. member) clears the fence, big gun in hand. Seconds later a cop tells them to get in the basement. 15 mins later they tell me they have him. ( My wife called me to 'do something')lol.
I wonder, if I had been there,
a) would my martial art skills have come in handy
b) would a knife have made me feel more secure
c) would I have just plain s@it my pants
Not sure why I'm putting this here. Look up Edmonton news for Rapist from the states caught.
O ya we live in a 'really nice' hood.

You people take stuff way to seriously!

And you're seriously defensive. If Mexico is of no interest to you then why bother to post here? You just looking to stir the pot or like to hear yourself type? Sounds like we have the classic definition of a Message Board Troll on our hands here! Obviously most people in this forum like Mexico and are repeat visitors. If you come in here and say "I'll stay our of Mexico", you are likely to receive some serious responses in Mexico's defense. That's like telling a mother her baby is ugly and everyone knows not to do that.

You should have instead said you're a wreck diver therefore Mexico offer's little diving you're interested in instead of insinuating that Mexico is recklessly unsafe and fosters laws that promote criminal activity by preventing visitors to conceal pocket knives.

I'm with others, in that I lack a "sense of humor" when it comes to spreading malicious lies about Cozumel. We get enough of that from the mainstream media. And Cozumel's economy is tourist dependent. I also don't recommend carrying a knife as a defensive weapon unless you're well trained and have practiced knife fighting (simply carrying a knife since childhood does not qualify as training). If you feel that you need training to protect yourself, I would personally try to find a place that could train you in Krav Maga. The martial art taught by and to the Israeli Defense Force.

teknitroxdiver;4609521]I assume you're referring to the scores of killings that have taken place in Cozumel recently. Oh, wait, right. There haven't been any. Duh. :shakehead That is not what I said at all. One could disscuss the corruption, the police, government, to no end.....same can be said for US cities as well as Canadian. One good thing about this economic meltdown is, the ROCKs are being turned over every where. No place to hide now. I was only stating the NO POCKET knives rule as silly and unfounded (there tools! nothing more) But I can understand your offence.....none intended....here is a article from the Associated Press, about the Mexico violence problem.......... .A: While parts of Mexico are experiencing drug cartel violence, it seldom touches places like Cozumel, a balmy island just off Mexico's Caribbean coast.

To put it in perspective, 1,008 cruise ships bearing 2,569,433 tourists visited the island in 2008. None appears to have fallen victim to cartel killings. Most mishaps involve diving, parasailing or falling off boats, so take normal precautions.

Mexican authorities pay close attention to security in tourist areas, so you might see some Mexican navy or army personnel. That's no reason to be alarmed, or to cancel your trip.

Of course, you should be careful whenever you travel. While 57 percent of Mexico's drug-related killings are concentrated in just three northern cities — Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana and Culiacan, all very far from Cozumel — common crime occurs everywhere.
