Good Lord, why do these Coz and Mexico threads invariably deteriorate into someone Mexico bashing? Sure, this country has its problems, so does yours!!! At the same time, there are hordes of us who live here or vacation here, love it, and get, quite frankly, highly PO'd at unfounded pointing fingers that haven't even been here to experience it firsthand. I don't trash your hometown or favorite vacation destination based on secondhand information, kindly return the favor.

I would prefer to bring this back to the subject. Thanks Don for the notice, I didn't know I couldn't carry a knife around. One question, I always carry a Leatherman, would the blades on that be in the same category?

And Really, I think the point here is not a discussion of whether or not there is crime in Cozumel, it is a warning that the laws there are not the same as in the US and that if you do not follow local law, you have the potential to face the consequences of those actions.

I have two cousins right now who chose to ignore Fiji's drug laws and will be spending 5 years in a Fijian jail. Sorry, but not the sort of vacation I would like.

Quite a long one though :p

Right. no pocket knives or gloves but you can carry an AK-47 or other suitable machine gun but only if you are engaged in killing law enforcement personel.!

I guess that's true just about anywhere.

I'd be willing to bet you can't point to a single instance of this on Cozumel....ever. I would further bet that every instance of such you can find reference to anywhere in Mexico, I can find the two matching instances from the good old USA. I have, and will continue to walk through the streets of Cozumel at all hours of the night without worry....but certainly would not do that in the majority of the cities I've been in north of the border. Truth be told, our law enforcement cares far less about my safety than the automatic rifle carrying military presence on cozumel does. I'm safer there...than here because their law enforcement has teeth, where mine is just ticket writing income for the local govt. Here, I defend my own house and god help the criminal who challenges that defense...but in Coz, I find no need to worry.

As a retired marine, I realize that perhaps I feel a bit safer behind my personal protection skills than some others may...but anyone thinking a pocket knife is protection from a professional criminal needs to seriously examine their self defense training. A K-bar...different story, but a pocket knifes sole purpose in a street fight is to keep the guys eyes focused away from where the real damage is going to hit him from. Feint with baby knife, get him looking up...break his knee backwards...walk away. The same can be accomplished without the knife pretty easily.

Or even better, with HIS knife without your prints on it :p

"I dont know what happened officer, he just came towards me with a knife and then he slit his own throat. Gotta been very messed up that guy :o"

Reading that conjured up the picture of a mugging victim struggling to get out his pocket knife and open the blade while the mugger... what? Stands there and waits for him? :D
