Well, if anything else, this thread is making me *really* want to get my own <grin>! The last time I tried to contact the instructor who taught the Nitrox class, she was in the Red Sea on a trip, living the high life.... probably with her own tester!

Most of you missed the OP's post on page 3. It sounds like it was a misunderstanding. This particular shop did NOT require an analyzer, but strongly suggested it, which is what any good instructor would do. If you want to use someone elses piece of gear, thats your choice, but its always better to have your own.

Befor buying a analyzer, ask yourself a few questions like How much will I be diving with Nitrox Vs. Air? Is it worth the cost? Since most dive shops that sell Nitrox have one, for you to check and log info. Is it a reputable shop your getting your Air/Nitrox from to begin with. Also a good quick check on the Analyzer calibration is to check a air tank, and see what % it reads.

Web Monkey:
Not every shop has an analyzer that you can trust and many have an analyzer that you aren't permitted to touch, and it's run by an employee who may not be properly trained in it's use.

I was on a trip once where the tank monkey hooked up my tank, cranked the zero-adjust until it said "32" than looked at me and said "32 Percent".

Did it work correctly when you calibrated it and tested your own tank?

My wife and I finished the class a couple of hours ago. The instructors had a couple of analyzers for us to use and a number of their personal war stories about diving in MexicoFloridafillintheblank where the gas ordered was off by much more than the 1% allowable tolerance. Made a believer of me. As soon as I get a little loose change lying around, I'll be looking into getting my own.

I've had tanks where I asked for 32% and found 50%, so I've become really compulsive about checking my own tanks with my own analyzer.
