NAUI has two options. 1. Nitrox Program - no dives required. 2. Nitrox Diver - 2 divers required.
1st option card says "Nitrox". 2nd option card says "Nitrox Diver"
Ask the instructor what they do.
Actually IANTD is one of the best for technical stuff. Some would argue that there a little old school, but I know they just updated a bunch of their courses so that arguement no longer holds. I know Nitrox and advanced nitrox is one of the updated courses.
You may have run into a familiar problem with dive shops. They buy the books and have them in inventory, then an updated course/book comes out and now the dive shop needs to off load the old books, so for a few months after the new course/book comes out some shops are still teaching from the old stuff just to get it off the shelfs before buying the new books. When I bought my advanced nitrox books, I know there were some old ones floating around. So I specificlly asked for the new ones when I bought them.
I don't know what part of the area your from, but to avoid this in the future, if your looking for technical classes you'll want to stick to either adventure sports (Tampa), or Scuba West (Hudson). Those are the only "true" tech shops in the area that I have experience with and that I haven't heard bad things about, and that on any given day you'll find a handfull of techies just hanging out talking tech to kill time.
