May I ask if you adjust the focus manually? I've always gotten terrible u/w videos with my D90 cos everything seems out of focus. Nothing at all like my previous Canon G9... sigh

Hi Gymrat76,

I focus first through my viewfinder before I turn on my liveview. The Tokina 10-17mm doesnt need much focusing anyway. It has everything in focus unless you get really close.

BTW I can't manual focus behind the 8 inch dome, even if you wanted too.

Interesting to hear about the nurse sharks checking out the red lights. I'll have to try to see what kind of animals I can get to come close with the 'submarine lights' on. Hope nothing too toothy at night...

How did the pair go together? enough spread for wide angle? Did you mount them wide?

I like the pair but I don't really use them for wide angle...mainly for macro stuff (and not always using the pair, usually just one). I like the two for macro so I can get rid of shadows a bit. I'm still learning how to use my whole rig (L&M Stingray) but I think I got some great results from trip this summer (Bali / Alor / Raja Ampat). I'll post the videos on my Vimeo account when I finish them...

Hi Notyetbent,

Ok your using them for video lights on your stringray. Guess you dont need a wide spread as you would with the DSLR and wide angle lenses.

How have you found their burn time? Did you need to use them on full power? or half power?

I am currently strobe-less as I sold my Ikelites to pay for new ones on order so I will try and take out the Nikon d90 and shoot the sharks again with the red LED to show you how they react.

Regards Mark

Hi Mark-

If I ever save up the money for the Fathom 90 (expensive 90deg WAL for the Stingray) then I'll play around with them as wide angle lights...but until then, they're mainly used for macro and at night.

I have never had them die on me during a 4 dive day. I have only seen the LED power indicators go red once (~60 dives with rig). Generally, I use them at 2/3 power during the day and at night I use one at 1/3 power (as my torch) till I see something I want to shoot, then switch to both 1/3 power (any more is too bright at night for anything closer, I feel)....I don't even carry a torch anymore (unless the worms are bad). Maybe I should use them more often though...

I'd love to see that shark footage...let me know when it's up! I have videos of Alor, Bali, and Raja Ampat with the Sola's that are in the works. Will shoot you a link if you're interested.
