Not sure. We did split a ham sandwich at the hotel and that was the only food we ate in common. No one else in our group ate that or got sick.
Many food-borne illnesses, as well as common noro- and rotaviruses, are highly contagious. Given that you are husband and wife, it's very possible one of you contracted the bug and gave it to the other via a lusty kiss. Isn't that romantic?

What about water.... were you drinking tap water at the hotel? brushing teeth? Did you stick to bottled water?
My first several trips to Cozumel I got sick as did my husband and teenager a few times. We had no idea where or how. Our guess was from a restaurant.
Since we have been staying and eating at SCC, we have not had a single problem.. we now stick to bottled water or drinks from cans when outside of the resort.
