It can definitely get worse than last Saturday, when the swells were running
about 13' at 13 seconds at the buoy. One year when they had the Nikonos
Shootout in Monterey, it was running 18'. I chose not to dive. And each
winter we get some 20' swells. Note that the energy content of a swell is
at least the square of the height.

Yup, it can get VERY big. I've been out there in 24-30 foot seas (on a cruise ship), and even that 900 ft long thing was rockin' and rollin'. The waves were crashing up over the breakwater, into the parking lot.

I was thinking of hitting Monastery that day, but couldn't find a ride from the breakwater down there. ;)
