Take kidspot up on his offer. He lives there, knows the sites well, and can judge conditions for you. He's also an OW instructor, tech trained, and a heck of a nice guy.

There is some lovely shore diving to be had off Maui, if conditions permit. I think shore diving is sometimes better for new divers, as you don't have the time pressure of having to gear up and be ready on the boat's schedule.
