Just joined this forum today to start my research on how to go about learning to dive. I've always wanted to dive but am claustrophobic and so I sit on the sidelines watching everyone else enjoy their dives. That's tough when you're in the Bahamas, Hawai'i, Mexico, etc. and you're the only one not joining in on the dinner conversation re: how great today's dive was and what you saw.

So, I've finally decided to try it and overcome my fear. I thought that if I did enough research and found a trainer that could work with someone who was a little fearful that I would be able to finally tackle my fear and enjoy myself and never again feel like I'm missing out.

I live in the CA East Bay, Tri-Valley area. Does any have any recommendations as to where I might start researching trainers in this area?

Thanks for any/all assistance.

Welcome to scubaboard!

Check out the NorCal regional forum at http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/norcal/ - you'll find a lot of advice and encouragement here, and a steady stream of dive buddies for once you've made it past certification.

Wherever you go for certification, just take it nice and slow. Find an instructor who is willing to take the time to work with you and help you overcome any anxieties you have.

Thank you all so much for the welcome and the tips. I really appreciate it. I'm very much looking forward to beginning this journey.

welcome aboard
