I'm a Fish!
Hello, I have been a lurker for the past week and decided to make my first post. I am a Venture Scout Crew Advisor for Crew 1510 in Salem UT. My crew has expressed interest in getting the OW certification so we can have a High Adventure that isn't just backpacking somewhere inthe High Unitahs.

Lately, learning all I can about SCUBA diving and equipment has been an obsession and I need to get certified soon to satiate my hunger. I will be purchasing my M/S/F within the next few weeks. Right now we are still looking for the cheapest and best LDS or referral that can get my boys certified. Hopefully we will be able to get certified by the end of Jan 08' we already have activities planned for the rest of this year, so most likely we will be waiting until Jan 08' to start our courses. We have also invited the local Varsity Scout team to join us in getting certified.

My goal is to become a DM sometime in 2009, with goals of completing my OW, AOW, and at least 3 specialties (enriched air, Peak Performance bouyancy, and Search & Recovery) before the end of 08'.

It seemm like this board is the best place to ask for advice since they have a scouting section also. I hope to be able to share my experiences in the future with other crews/teams/troops that need help getting a Scuba program going in their area.

Clanggedin,

Welcome to SB. The information that can be obtained is amazing and has a worldwide reach. I had a question regarding root canal & diving for example, sure enough searching the forum answers were found. My dentist already deals with this issue, but was happy to read the comments and confirmed it was good practice. You will find so many things on SB. You have some serious goals. I suggest you look at scuba toys for equipment:

Scuba Gear and Scuba Diving Equipment dive gear

and look for a PADI instructor in your area. Don't be too hard on yourself, as becoming a DM is not that easy. You may change your mind as time goes by. Getting certified and getting some dives under your weight belt would be best. The fact that you have interest and can help others discover the joys of diving is very good.

I run a scuba club for students at my international school (grades 9-12). I selected these ages with depth restrictions and student maturity in mind. I went the through DM training last summer for similar reasons you seem to have. Currently I run the club with another teacher who is OWSI certified. I hope to be OWSI certified next summer (08). I think you have a great idea, and from experience I can see it happening. It takes time and $$.

Good luck,

Arizona

If you haven't yet, click Forums above and start going thru the list - looking for those of interest to you, especially your local dive club. Always good to try a Search before starting a new thread, tho :search: - click here for Search help, and be careful about posting Threads & Replies before reading the Sticky threads at the tops of most forums. PM me if I can help you around here..
