HI, I have recently finished my OW certification and I am looking for a reg. I would like to eventually get into tec and wreck, but for now I am looking for experience. I will be primarily diving in cold water. I have talked with several people from my local dive shop ; the all suggest the oceanic GT3. can anyone give me some advise on this and other good cold water regs? Thank you.

The GT3 IS A GREAT COLD WATER REG. AT VERY REASONABLE PRICE.

I dive a Scubapro MK17 with a G250v reg set up, and am very happy with it for both cold ans warm water diving.

I'm not familiar with the GT3 but I can comment on what I've used. I started with the ScubaPro R190/Mk2 Combo. It is a basic unbalanced piston style 1rst stage and unbalanced second which has been around for decades. It is a tried and true design which has good cold water performance. If you want something cheap that you can take into most conditions and get serviced all over the world, you can't really go wrong with the Mk2. I am now using the Aqualung Legend LX which is a balanced diaphragm 1rst stage and a balanced 2nd. It too has superb cold water performance and breathes great at any depth. The main reason I switched over to the Legend was that I was unhappy with the severe dry mouth I was getting with the Mk2 and wanted something that breathed more naturally. I found that the Mk2 seemed to have a very mechanical feel in its delivery of air. If you want to get a good entry level regulator, I and many others on this forum would point you in the direction of the Mk2. If you want a top of the line reg the Legend is a great option.
The Mk2 is very comparable to the Oceanic Alpha 8
The Legend is very similar to the ScubaPro Mk17/G250v and the Apeks XTX series regulators

Read this about the Oceanic Delta 4 / FDX10 combo https://www.diverightinscuba.com/catalog/product_reviews_info.php?products_id=127&reviews_id=6

The GT3/CDX5 might cost $250 but the Delta 4 w/o the swivel and DVT is just $400 and it will do cold water. So sayeth NOAA, the US Coast Guard and the US Navy. I bought one for my wife to use in 50 deg F water (maybe a little colder).

At the same price, I have bought 2 Dive Rite Hurricane regs (hard to find right now) that should also work well in cold water.

I would also consider the ScubaPro Mk 17 / G250V for cold water and the Mk 25 / G250V for deep (but not cold) water.

is the GT3 comparable with the Delta 4?

Another vote for AL Legend. I have dove 34 degree waters in mid teen air temps without any issues.

I have also dove it down to 126' and it breathed as great as at 15'. I have many dives over 100' in cold water with them and never one problem.
I love my Legends.

I have also dove the AL Titan LX Supreme in similar conditions and had good luck although the Legend did breath easier at depth.

what is the difference between the AC and the ACD legend? As I have said I would like to get into tec eventually, so what will be transferable ? I was also wandering what I would need as an octo to go with the suggested regs? Thank you

I'm not familiar with "AC" but "ACD" stands for automatice closure device. This is standard on newer Legends and the first stage automatically closes off when the air pressure is removed, supposedly preventing contaminants from getting in.

I suggest getting a secondary air source or octo similar to your primary. For example, the Legend has an octo which has a yellow face plate on it and the guts are the same as the primary Legend second stage (I believe).

You'll also find that Legends come as the Legend, a Legend LX (able to adjust the breathing capability), and the Supreme that can apply to the Legend and the Legend LX. Supreme usually designates primarily set up for cold water diving with a lip shield, lower IP setting and a silver face plate instead of the normal gold one.

I have a Legend and an Legend LX and can honestly say I have never used the LX adjustable feature.

I suggest going to the aqualung website to get details on any of these, I'm sure they can tell you more than I can.
