Titan's hull was supposed to be replaced every so many dives below 5000ft. He didn't do that because he ran short of funds and investors and kept using the same hull over and over again to the point of disaster. 25+ dives as I recall that went below 1000ft.

I think the idea is there to make use of stronger plastics, but it's a long term learning process and needs to be taken in steps.
