Hi everyone,

...picked up my copy of Dive Training yesterday, page 6 shows a new Apex XTX series model, "Status" , claims this reg provides real-time status of it's operational readiness and it's servicing status as well, the ad provides a photo of the first stage, the regular environmental dry-seal has been replaced with another version that has a small LCD display window where words like "OK" are displayed......anyone have any info on this model, what parameters it measures, how it does so, and whether it can be retrofitted to my 'older' Apexs XTX 200's ? ( I have a pair of them, 6 and 3 months old, respectively. )

Thanks,

Karl

Nope, you aren't going to be able to retro fit it to existing XTX or ATX regs.

Went to the launch of this at DEMA and it performs exactly the same as the normal XTX models, but the gizmo means it checks the inter-stage pressure when you first fit and turn on your air. If it is okay, it reads 'ok'. If it is too low or too high, it tells you it needs servicing.

It will also keep track of dive times and period of months since the last service, and it lets you know when this needs doing as well.

Do you have any more info on this? (url, source...anyhing)

So if the status indicator breaks and still says OK after 5 years I can keep diving it without getting it serviced right? :-)

It sounds like an IP guage would be a much wiser investment.

Don't think there is even a mention of it on the website yet (www.apeks.co.uk) or there wasn't prior to DEMA, but it might be on now.

I think the idea behind it is that not that many divers think about checking inter-stage pressure, and even fewer own an inter-stage pressure gauge. Yes, it is a gimmick, but at least it is very different from some of the other crap rolled out by manufacturers as being new and ground-breaking whe, in fact, they are flogging a dead horse.

One good point is that if the battery goes, or the LCD fails, it is totally separate to the first stage, so makes no difference to performance, etc.

This is a mid-fall April fools joke, right? A tiny LCD and micro controler in the 1st stage..... tells you the IP is ok. Tells you it's time for the annual service.... Does it have wireless so you can send the messages to your suunto instead of taking your tank off to read it?

And people said my u/w mp3 players has no value.

Maybe they will build the mp3 player into the 1st stage next? Then when it stops working it can send an audible message to your headphones :-) I hope they use the voice from the telephone error messages. Remember talking cars? this will be so much cooler.

The batteries are supposed to last two years plus, and they get changed out every service, so you aren't going to have an issue. Even if it did, it won't affect the first stage from working.
