I might be relocating from Michigan to the Santa Fe / Albuquerque area. We do alot of Great Lakes diving up here and wondered about the dive scene in NM. Any good LDSs or dive clubs? I know getting to Coz is easy, but how about weekend trips to CA? Any related info is much appreciated.:D

Ah ha.. funny you should ask, I just sent something to someone else who just moved here. I'll get a copy of it and post it.

Here is a quick rundown of the 3 local shops:

New Mexico Scuba Center:
http://www.nmscuba.com
-Phone: 271-0633
-SSI shop
-At Menaul and Pennsylvania in the NE part of town
-They are the local ScubaPro, Halcyon, Aeries, Oceanic, Zeagle, etc. They mostly sell Bare and Akona Wetsuits.

Sandia Snorkel and Scuba:
http://www.sandiasnorkel.com
-Phone: 247-8632
-PADI shop
-Near the airport/closest dive shop to the AF Base
-They are the local Dacor, Mares, Sherwood, Henderson, Tusa store

The Scuba Company:
http://www.scubaadventures.com
-Phone: 888-7990
-PADI Shop
-Near Menaul and San Mateo
-They are the local AquaLung/Apeks, Suunto, Atomics, etc. dealer. I think they usually have Excel and O'Neil wetsuits.

Those are the 3 dive shops in Albuquerque, there are none in Santa Fe. The Blue Hole in Santa Rosa is the local place that we usually dive:

This is about a 2 hour drive from Alb, slightly less from SF.

We have a group that goes out fairly regularly, and would love to have you come dive with us. Kevin (abqdiver), James (Amascuba), and myself dive here pretty often, as well as other people in our group who aren't on scubaboard. You definitely shouldn't have too hard of a time finding buddies to dive with.

If you want any more info just let me know.

A weekend trip to CA from ABQ would be something like, leave Friday night, drive 12 hours, dive one day, or maybe a day and a half, and then drive 12 hours back.

Definately do-able, but I can't speak as to if anyone actually does that! :D If I lived there , I'd likely do it if I could find people crazy enough to go for a long weekend! :D

I'll see ya at the Hole sometime! I am crazy enough to do the 6 hours of driving one way to dive there, even if I always question my sanity on the way down! :shakehead

Heck, I'd make weekend trips a couple times a year. Leave Friday, dive Saturday, Leave Sunday.

PARADISE HUNTER, definitely come out to blue hole with us sometime.

Many New Mexico divers, like their Arizona neighbors travel to the Gulf of California, between Puerto Penasco and San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico - there's great diving up and down the western coast .

It's 345 miles to Douglas, AZ from ABQ, 6 hours by car; Douglas to Puerto Penacso, 4 hours; Douglas to San Carlos, 5 hours.

That is very true. I know 2 people from Alb. who make that trip twice a year, they love it.

Thanks for the info guys. If I end up making the move, I will post something on SB and look forward to diving with you.

Bill

I have made the trip to San Carlos MX With Dive Quest Scuba out of Las Cruces. In my opinion they are the Best dive shop I know of in New Mexico.

I would PRAY to the Diving Gods you don't get relocated from your dive area to NM--- (NM is a really wonderful state....but the pits for diving).!!!
