Hey all,

I certified last October and only have a handful of dives under my belt. I live in Jersey City so for those who know NJ know it doesn't involve recreational diving, unless someone gets murdered then maybe a dive team will look for a body.

Anyway, i'm looking to expand my horizons with some more dives, but really i'm looking for a good way to get there and i figured a local dive club would be the best way to expand my horizons. Started my usual google searches and found some clubs - some active, some disbanded. Does anyone here in the area know of some really good active clubs? Is this club well catering to new divers?

Thanks for reading my drawn out post. I hope to meet of you out in the water.

L30-

Contact your local dive shops and ask them. If not, start one of your own and ask the dive shops if they would be willing to participate. Some of the shops that I have been around do these and offer club members discounts on gear (of course there will have to member fees) and sometimes even offer club members to purchase new gear early before the release date. These types of perks are things that you would have to work out with the which ever dive shop will partake in your quest for a dive club, but they are fun and generate good friends that enjoy diving.

thannks gypsyjim .. ill check it out!

Hey! There is GREAT local recreational diving here...

Check out the Sea Gypsies... we meet monthly in New York City, but we have a lot of local diving planned, including an "Introduction to Northeast Diving" day at Dutch Springs in two weeks.

This weekend, we are sharing a charter on one of the New Jersey boats - the John Jack - with a New Jersey dive club as well.

We have also done trips to the Keys and North Carolina. If you prefer warmer water, this summer, we are taking a road trip to the Thousand Islands where it's mid 70s top to bottom (although this might be a bit more advanced a dive trip if you are fairly new).

Congratulations on getting certified, and welcome to the board...

Mike

Check out Lakeland Divers in East Hanover NJ. They hold monthly get togethers to highlight dive trips, wrecks, etc. In addition, they run a "new diver day" several times a year on the Sea Lion out of Brielle, which is a great introduction to NE Wreck diving.
