I managed to reproduce this issue, both on iOS and Android. Too busy this weekend to dive into it, in the coming week I'll check it out.
 
Yes. They’re pretty intrusive

When I look at the "New Posts" list many of the ads populate the entire screen.

I use Chrome as my browser.

Why am I seeing them -- also on Chrome?

This is the last straw; gone now are the perky girls in Spandex, who have now been replaced by a pleasant though far less perky and lycra-spandex-free ad, for relocation to Fresno -- where I once had a water pump failure in their August 40˚ C heat . . .

I do find the new ads intrusive, but they are freeing up some time for me. According to my time tracking app I am spending almost 40% less time on Scubaboard in the past week compared to my average. I can only assume that it is forcing me to skim through the posts more than I used to. Silver lining I suppose.
