Hey everyone, a few weeks ago I completed my open water certification with Pan Aqua in NYC. I am going to be in Calabash, NC for a week the first week of August and was wondering if there are any simple, relatively shallow sites near Myrtle Beach that are suitable for a newbie packing only the checkout dives under his belt right now? I did those dive in Dutch Springs in PA.

Thanks,
Jeff

Welcome from a fellow NJ diver!

There's plenty of great diving in NC but it's predominantly wreck diving, and might be a little bit more challenging (deeper, darker, current, etc) than I'd recommend for logged Dive #5

Seems to be some shops offering more shallow OW-appropriate stuff though...

Nu Horizons Dive and Travel (Note: I know nothing about this shop, just using their link as an example of sites.)

Welcome to diving and to ScubaBoard!

Hopefully you'll take up local diving when you get back - we've got more diveable shipwrecks off the coast of NJ than anywhere else in the world!

Thanks for the reply. I'm just trying to get some experience in, but I just don't know where the best places are for beginners. I hear that NJ is difficult because of low visibility and a lot of strong currents. I've also been told that a lot of boats up here look for AOW before allowing you to dive with them. I'm a bit hesitant to do the AOW before at the very least having a few logged dives beyond the training dives, you know? I guess I could always tag along with the shop to Dutch Springs and get some more dives in later this summer.

Thanks again!!!
