Hello fellow divers,

I recently got back into the sport and had some grey atomic split fins I got way back when. After much debate and some research I figured I would like to purchase the ScubaPro Seawing Novas in white and started doing a little research that brought up the "high contrast" argument in regards to some species of sharks and their attraction to some colors/contrasts. Is there any chance I am just overthinking this or should I steer clear and just go for the black fins per usual?

Sharks do see high contrast well. I haven't gone over any data to know if divers wearing high contrast gear are more likely to be attacked than those who don't, but I'm guessing that it really isn't much of a problem in real life. Overall, though, the chances of being attacked by a shark is probably greatly outweighed by the safety of having gear that is easily visible by your buddy and/or rescuers.

I suppose if depends on the type of diving you do, but I would get the color fins you like and not worry much about the shark issue. Then again, I mostly dive low-visability fresh water, where I can't see black fins nearly as well and the biggest threat is a large trout bumping into my mask

There is always a big debate about this in many places, not just here on Scubaboard.

Whatever you decide, just know that there are some operators/charters that do dives in waters that have sharks who will not let you dive with high contrast or brightly colored fins, or basically any fins that are not black. If that matters to you that you may not join on those dives or will have to rent fins, then I would err on the side of caution and just go with black.

"You can have any color as long as it's black."

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)
