There is a big difference in "not supporting" them and parts not being available. The parts for my 60's Voit/AMF Titan II which are the origins of the MR-12 series have long since been "not supported". What that actually means is there are no parts kits from Mares (who took over Voit/AMF). However, the parts are still used in current Mares regs, you just have to know which ones to pick and choose from. I just restored a Titan II with all new internals, first and second stage. Really nice breathing reg I might add.

And I willl give you $25 and pay to ship. :)

1+.

Regarding the "demise" of the MR-12.... not time for a "death watch" just yet

1.) The MR-12 is still part of the Mares "economy" regulator lineup (pared with the Prestige 2nd stage)!!! Go to the Mares official website to confirm for yourself...

2.) There is substantial "commonality" in parts between the Mares diaphragm 1sts... the MR-12 shares the same rebuild parts, HP poppet, diaphragm, diaphragm spring, balance chamber, poppet spring, poppet seat.... etc, etc, with the MR-22. My guess is the poppet pin might be a different length.... but I've never laid them side-by-side.

3.) The current MR-12 HP poppet is "backwards compatible" with the old MR-12's.

I'm not terribly worried about servicing the four MR-12's I currently own for many years.

Best wishes.

I tried to rebuild a III several months ago. With no kits available, I decided to mix and match from other obscure models for which I had kits. I found out the poppet seat is a different diameter than the other Mares second stage poppet seats. I called the company. That's when I found out that they are no longer supporting that reg. The o-rings are no problem. The poppet seat is the problem.

I could be wrong about the MR-12.

Thanks again guys. I'm planning on taking it in next week to have it looked at by my LDS and see what they can do with it. I'm not gonna be heartbroken if they say they can't service it. It was only $20 so not too big a loss.

Chris, If the shop cannot find a second stage seat (I make it a nominal 6.5mm diam, 2mm thick--a bit smaller diam. than usual) please email me.

send it to scubatoys.com, they service regulators for $50 plus parts!!!

+1 on ScubaToys service. If your LDS says they can't service it, give scubatoys a call. My boss has a Dacor Viper America that a local Mares (bought out Dacor) shop said could no longer be serviced. He contacted ScubaToys and they said no problem. He sent it off and it was back in about a week for about $100 parts and labor.

Naui,
That is yet another case of a dishonest or unknowledgable LDS. The Viper regs are post Mares takeover, and parts should be available to any Mares dealer. I agree that Scubatoys is a class operation.

We're all waiting to see what was the result of your trip to your LDS.

even the lurkers want to know! (Because I was thinking it would make for a cool display if not a working piece...)

Heaven Forbid!!!! That reg deserves to be diving, not stuck on a shelf somewhere. :)
