My wife and I are scheduled to complete our open water dives this weekend. We both have come down with head colds and don't know what to do. Any advice that I can get would be very helpful. Please Help.

Truly,..... you should wait until you are both healthy enough to dive. You could take meds to mask the symptoms, but then you run the risk of the drugs either not working, not working completely or them wearing off before you finish your diving, increasing the risk of having a reverse block &/or barotrauma (injury caused by the pressure changes). To be safe, reschedule your checkout dives to do when you don't have to rely on medication to keep the congestion & swelling down. You might be able to contact a Dr. that is familiar with or specializing in diving medicine, but generally, they'll probably tell you the same thing. Better to be safe than sorry. You can always dive another day. If you injure yourself badly enough, you may close that door permanently.

By the way, welcome to the board!

Howdy and Welcome to SB.com!

Yep, you shouldn't do it this weekend. I would  but you shouldn't. If you do feel a lot better, keep taking the decongestants and antihistamines that help between now, hydrate very well, and take more coats & hats than you think you'll need. ;)

Click Forums at the top to start checking all the choices, and try our :search: feature. Hope you enjoy your time here. Click my Username to PM me if I can help? Helpful Hint: I have UserCP bookmarked as the page I go to first when I come onto SB.

Ditto on the 'delay till you are well' ..... no reason to put yourselves at risk ... and you'll enjoy it all more when you're both healthy!!

And welocme to SB ... you'll have a blast around here when you aren't under water!:D

Just put off the dive but Id wait till friday before hand to see if it clears. If not then the damage may be permanent.

Hope you get to feeling better.

Welcome to the board also!

Well this is Monday so you have 5 days to hope things clear well.

Make sure that you are clear and are really feeling up to the task. Diving in open water for the first time and performing certification activities often exhausts healthy divers so don't overextend yourselves.

If you find your selves feeling really good on Friday but with perhaps a little residual congestion in the head you might try repeated nasal flushing with a bottle of saline solution. I had really good luck once cleaning my head out after a cold had passed using that stuff.

Whatever you do be honest with yourselves, it's not worth barotrauma and you want to enjoy the experience.

Pete
