Anyone out there see any activity towards this project. Suspect it was another project PR teaser intended to find investors.

There is public consultation going on, which doesnt mean anything other than part of the formal process. Here is a petition with information about the new cruise ship pier. The guy who owns the ultramar ferries is involved.

The article is from Nov. 2020 and states:
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnet) approval now means the project can move forward, and construction on the new development is set to begin in December 2020.

They refer to the pier being by the car ferry. Are they referring to the pier that is just a bit north of Blue Angel? If so, this would also have a big impact on one of the favorite swimming areas many of the local families use.

Its going to destroy villablanca wall from what I hear. We loved diving there on sundays when no cruise ships in

No. The new pier location is slated to go next to Sunset Bar / Sand Dollar Sports. Its where currently the underwater busts of Cousteau, Dr Sylvia Earle are. It will push it out to Villablanca Wall area.

Is there any cruise ship piers over at Playa? The mainland could support the load better imo.

Not an option as the prevailing winds push into the PDC coastal areas 90% of the time and there is no deep water port to dock them at. They would have to dig out/dredge a massive area with a breakwater to do it which would be 100x pricier than blowing up ANOTHER reef.......... :(

There isn't a cruise ship pier in Playa del Carmen, but there is (was?) a cruise ship pier located at Calica which serves Playa del Carmen. I suspect it's not very large and not very deep.

The dock at Calica isn't a pier out into the Caribbean, it's a dock in the inlet where other ships go in and out. There's a big limestone quarry in there.

I believe the Calica limestone quarry and Xel Ha are still part of Cozumel. When the Solidaridad municipality (Playa del Carmen) was carved out the Cozumel municipality they retain those two mainland sites
