There is public consultation going on, which doesnt mean anything other than part of the formal process. Here is a petition with information about the new cruise ship pier. The article is from Nov. 2020 and states:
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnet) approval now means the project can move forward, and construction on the new development is set to begin in December 2020.
They refer to the pier being by the car ferry. Are they referring to the pier that is just a bit north of Blue Angel? If so, this would also have a big impact on one of the favorite swimming areas many of the local families use.
Is there any cruise ship piers over at Playa? The mainland could support the load better imo.
The dock at Calica isn't a pier out into the Caribbean, it's a dock in the inlet where other ships go in and out. There's a big limestone quarry in there.There isn't a cruise ship pier in Playa del Carmen, but there is (was?) a cruise ship pier located at Calica which serves Playa del Carmen. I suspect it's not very large and not very deep.
I believe the Calica limestone quarry and Xel Ha are still part of Cozumel.
