Just saw this article written by Steve Douglas on the basics of underwater video. Although he has some biases, it's worth reading, he provides some useful info. There is an good example of the results you can achieve by manual white balancing instead of using a red filter near the end of the article.

Useful info with good photo examples. I`ll use some of this on our trip to the
Bahamas aboard the Explorer I , in July ( 16-23 ) , Thanks again.
 
This has been a hot topic lately on this board. This article has sparked another question, for those that manually white balance: Do you white balance with or without a red (or other color) filter?
