New Apple Watch is a dive computer

For most people, a 40 m Apple Watch dive computer is good enough. That would probably be 90% of the people on this forum (incl me)!

Brilliantly priced. All that for 800$ ? it is high altitude compatible as well. And of course u can get a strap to watch to office. This is the reason it has the battery it has - u dont store it in ur dive bag and never use it during the day. It stays on ur wrist. It charges by your bedside. People are already doing this. Wireless charging. The battery WILL NOT be a problem

I like this take. Personally the Apple Watch seems like a win for athletes, but the battery is really a limiting factor for scuba or adventure sports. I'd take it more seriously as an option if it could last a weekend without using battery saver, but for the price its hard to pick it over something I could do a dozen dives with without having battery anxiety. I do see how it could scare the competition as it would be a serious threat with a better battery and depth rating. There will probably be a few people who do one or two dives a year that this is super appealing to over a regular computer.

Exactly. Think of the vacation diver that probably owns mask, DC, maybe a reg set. This is going to murder that market I think.

Any news on air integration?

That’s what I am wondering. I currently have two Perdix AIs in order to have a hot backup at all times, but obviously that second computer is going to be unused the vast majority of the time. I guess if it was just a backup I could carry the Apple Watch and an SPG, which I was planning to add anyway once I get the 5th port.

Apple Watch Ultra has a water resistance rating of 100 meters under ISO standard 22810. Apple Watch Ultra may be used for recreational scuba diving (with a compatible third-party app from the App Store) to 40 meters, and high-speed water sports. Apple Watch Ultra should not be used for diving below 40 meters. Water resistance is not a permanent condition and can diminish over time.

!!! That also implies that you could have different apps so you could pick your favorite. Truly, an actual dive computer rather than a primitive integrator, which is what they technically are.

Was just going to post this. People complaining about the battery life are overthinking this. If you have an Apple Watch you already charge it once a day (over night or during down time). This is second nature for those users. This feature is only available on the extreme sport version, but it's the same price as the older titanium watches. It's definitely going after the Garmin running/diving watch market.

Really interesting, think its a smart move by apple. Won't really compete too much with Garmin/Sheatwater but man any of the mid tier dive computers are going to hurt I think.

The Ultra has a greatly increased battery life. "Apple Watch Ultra has the best battery life of any Apple Watch, reaching up to 36 hours during normal use.1 Additionally, a new low-power setting, ideal for multi-day experiences, can extend battery life to reach up to 60 hours."
I use an apple watch anyway. The satellite SOS capability of the new Iphone14 is also going to be huge.

it probably needs daily recharge (36 hrs, and up to 60 hours extended). But at least it is relatively easy to charge apple devices with power bank these days.

Maybe as a backup would be good but could by a second hand zoop for 150 same reason I said no to the garman
