Apple didn’t really make a DC. They up-armored an Apple Watch to get into the Garmin market and partnered with someone to make an app to give it DC functionality. I’d be very surprised if anyone other than occasional vacation divers had this as their only computer.

In response to people saying that anyone can just make a dive app for this Apple watch: I was under the impression that Apple has their system locked down and if they don't want you to make an app because it interferes with their own app/partner apps, they'll just reject your app submission.

Given the partnership with oceanic (and cashing in on subscription fees), I don't see them letting any Tom dick and Harry make a dive app.

If Apple has a lock on the Apps, I can see Samsung (or others on the Android side) making a dive rated watch and making it open for anyone to make a dive computer app on their watch. This will make it a more competitive and attractive "package" than the Apple locked unit. Heck, perhaps the Oceanic/Shearwater, etc. crowd will get into the Android watch side with dive apps.

I bought a Descent mk1 early and had little faith in Garmin’s ability to make a reliable dive computer. In fact it has worked out extremely well. Perhaps Apple can do the same. Time will tell.

I think this is exciting innovation, i'll keep my eye on it and i think we should all be a little more open minded about the possibilities it unlocks; rather than pessimistically asserting that "it wont work for such and such reason".
You may be a new diver, but this is the best point made in this entire 26 page thread...

I think that Apple's target market is people (like me) who appreciate and are invested in the Apple ecosystem, and are considering upgrading their Apple Watch for this new functionality. There are plenty of people in this thread who don't like Apple on general principals, and aren't open to this product.

I doubt that there are many people who would want something like this, and would also just compare Apple to some Garmin/Android product and decide which one they want based on features.

Just like virtually no one in the US looks at the Democratic and the Republican candidates for a given office and then decides by comparing their policy statements! :D

It is all speculation now. As somebody who has been in the technology field for decades, I have seen opportunities come from the most unexpected events and initiatives.

Cool. Apple can share your dive logs with your health insurance provider.
Life insurance provider: Jim, I see that you exceeded your depth rating and NDL last week. We're going to be canceling your policy. Have a great day!
Jim: my watch band broke and my buddy picked it up for me. It was a backup computer and I didn't exceed NDL on my shearwater.
Life Insurance: I said good day sir!
