Funny you mention that one.........I don't normally pay a lot of attention to the taxes on hotel bills. However, when I last stayed in down town SF, I was astonished at the number taxes on my hotel bill. So much so, that I vowed never to return. Probably mutually beneficial that I won't be returning.

Good to know there is at least one sane person left in that city.
Just came back from Orlando and plenty of taxes on that bill
They do the same here in the keys but I think Orlando was more

Back in the 90's and 00's it seems all the pro sports teams were demanding new stadiums, and cities were paying for them with new taxes on hotels and rental cars. To get the referendums passed, local car rentals were exempted so that the burden fell to visitors. This has made renting at an airport significantly more expensive to the point that a few times I have rented at a local off-airport location and taken an uber to it. While I didn't change my destination over it I did change my behaviour.
