The one that works for me is put your tongue at the roof of your mouth and try to push the rear of your tonge to the top of your head. This one works well for me.. Note that I am about the same expirence as you so take this with a grain of salt. I am hardly a seasoned vetern. Good luck on your dives.

I start eq'ing before i hit the water. Dont wait until you are starting your descent. If I am on a boat, I will eq once or twice as we pull out from the dock and a few times on the way to the dive site. If I have no problems above the water I wont have any descending. Be sure to constantly eq on the way down. Dont wait until your ears are uncomfy.....its too late then and will be harder.

The above is what works for me.....might for you....try other suggestions as well.

Hang in there.

Here is a chance to brush up on your Latin and get lots of ideas.

There is also an online video that walks throught the whole topic with lots of methods. I can't find that lionk by maybe someone will post it.

Like Rich said, do it early, do it often, don't do it just at dive time. Your tubes will respond to repeated equalization and you will gain confidence in creating the effect.
