Sorry, swivels aren't DIR no matter who's name is stamped on them.

Yes... everyone knows that.

QUALITY swivel: Kirby Morgan or Atomic

These are fine if you already have one. They are darned expensive if you don't.

Most just use a fixed 40 degree elbow.

The DIR police won't arrest you if you use one.

Oh... swivels aren't Hog, either... strictly speaking.

You need:
1 7ft LP hose
1 22-24" LP hose
1 24-26" HP SPG hose
1 LPI hose that should have come with your wing/BC

Or...

You need one 36" to 40" inch primary
one 22" back up
one 24" HP
and one 22" or 24" LPI hose that should have come with your wing.

Oh... and a fixed 40 degree elbow or QUALITY swivel on your primary hose.

Stephen,

out of curiousity, what's the deal with the elbow/swivel. I've never used one, and never seen the need for one. I can turn my head easily left/right, up/down, do figure 8s if need be, and my 7ft hose never binds or causes issues. What would the swivel add?

Well, like me you prefer to use a 7 footer and your BP/wing all of the time... and... I agree... there is certainly no reason to use a swivel or elbow with that set up.

Some folks, however, prefer to not to use a 7 for OW. Why? I don't know. (The only time that I don't recommend it is when the diver is using a standard BC and might find it difficult to cleanly and safely route a long hose.)

Some of these divers will use a 36" to 40" hose for their primary. This allows them to donate the primary with a length appropriate for air sharing while having a quality backup under their chin. Using this arrangement requires routing the primary under the arm but the angle that results from this routing does cause some significant strain or discomfort on the mouth.

An elbow relieves this problem. Though an additional O-ring is added - one additional failure point - it is generally accepted as a reasonable 'convenience'. Swivels, OTOH, are usually not recommended because they are known to fail quite often. An exception to this is the Kirby Morgan which stands out as a very reliable swivel. The Atomic is a Kirby Morgan. They both are very, usually prohibitively, expensive.
