My dear wifey lost her diamond today. It fell from her engagement ring. She is very upset. We have not done a complete search for it. However, I am not optimistic it will be found.

I don't live in a big city where there is a high volume diamond market/district (like NYC). I plan to shop around anyway, but I'm wondering....

I will be in Cozumel next week. Are the diamond prices any better than my local suburban jewelers? If so, where/when exactly should I shop? How much haggling should I do?

Thanks for any input.

Oh, crap. Go to Cozumel for You on Facebook. Someone was just talking about it. I think the answers is maybe if you know what you are doing? I *think* DI is the deal. Maybe?

No. Bought a nice silver chain in PDC years ago, last year looking for silver chains on eBay I found what I bought at 1/10th the cost. Ouch

Wife bought a nice cross with a cool inlay. They put everything in a bag, which we opened as they handed it to us. The chain was switched to a crappy kinked one.

The local jewlery shops there are not known to offer good deals. Check your local shops.

The place to look for good deals on diamonds (and sapphires) is Bangkok, not Cozumel. The amount of money saved will pay for the flight and a decent hotel for a week.

Thanks everyone! I'll take care of things around home.

I have asked a diver who visits Coz and is a jeweler to comment here. I've seen his posts about such on FB.

You might also talk to your homeowners insurance agent about listing such on a seperate ride. S/he'll explain much better than I could.

Unless you REALLY know what you're doing buying a diamond...I'd pick a jeweler you trust at home for a replacement. You can teach me the 4 c's all day long and I still couldn't tell a good cz from a diamond.

If the ring was recently purchased, the store may warranty a new diamond. We had that happen right after we were married and it turned out when the ring was sized, they heated it up to much and the mount was brittle. I'm always amazed at how the ostrich and caymen boots have EXACTLY the same pattern, but the sales staff swear the skins are "real" caymen or full quill ostrich. Some things are cheaper in Mexico....some things are fake......$1200 ridge tail caymen boots for $150, I don't think so.

sorry about the ring troubles, good luck and have fun on your trip.
safe travels,
jay

My wife and I bought some "silver" jewelry last year in Coz. The silver finish wore off my wife's pendent within a few months of getting home.

We decided no more expensive jewelry, of any type, from the island.

Buy local and get the next one insured. Usually, the Jeweler that sells and sets the stone, will warranty the stone as long as you bring it in every 6/12 months for cleaning and inspection (both usually free services). If not, find one who does.

I bought my GF some purple gem stone in a silver mount about three years ago and it appears to be holding up nicely. I am not a jewelry person but she is. To me the ring was more about the moment and vacation so I just haggled a little and paid their price...wasn't really looking for deals like I find in Bangkok.

+1 for Bangkok for diamonds and precious gems
