Hey everyone, quick question. I am looking for a place to if you will pardon the pun, get my feet wet with my buddy in the Atlantic, either out of OC, VA, or NC. I have never dove the ocean up in this area and am looking for someplace we could do a couple dives that are:
1. Above 100', above 70 would be perfered.
2. While surge and current are going to be there I know, as low as possible.
3. The drive can be made in a day from roughly Milbrook quarry.

Any suggestions? Kinda the hey welcome home from your cert in the wonderful waters of the bahamas.... Here is your local diving conditions... MUHAHAHAHA

Fenwick Shoals near OC is pretty tame. It's 35 ft with a noticeable but low surge. The Blenny and African Queen are around 70 ft. Aquaventures (near Baltimore) is running a trip to them in July.

VA Beach has plenty of relatively shallow stuff. The Gulf Hustler, Hanks, Ricks and Tiger to name a few.

Out of the northern part of NC (better conditions then VA beach but not at nice as Hatteras) there is the Advance, Jackson and a few others. Check with http://www.obxdive.com/.

I'm not familiar with the sites south of Hatteras.

That's a pretty good description of the Chesapeake Light Tower reef. There are quite a few wrecks as well.

I run the boat for Divers Unlimited in Norfolk sometimes and we make quite a few runs out there. Lynnhaven Dive Center and DiveQuarters, both in Virginia Beach, run trips to that reef as well.

Don,
I saw your post on that previously. Could you shoot me a PM with some contact info so I could give you a call and get some details?

I second these suggestions and would personally recommend using Olympus for your charter. The Indra is the standard inshore wreck dive around here; lots of life and you can get long bottom times because of the shallow depth.

PM sent.

In the meantime, here is the link to the VMRC artificial reef program info.

The tower reef is too far offshore to be in Virginia, but VMRC is the permit holder for it.

I'm in the same boat so to speak, I'm considering a trip with Surface Interval, out of Indian River, Delaware on 07/16, two tanks, 1st dive 70' old Navy Tug, 2nd dive Fenwick Shoals, 25-35'. Don't know your travel time to there, but may be what your looking for.
