Does anyone know or heard of this? I had booked last year and went online to view my balance. There is a 5% tax being assessed now called mexican VAT?

I would like to know about this also as it's suddenly appeared in my account. When I first booked, and in the last balance e-mailed to me in November, it included the note: "Please note: above pricing includes all taxes except a USD65 per person port fee payable onboard." Now that note has disappeared and the Mexican VAT charge has appeared. No notice was given about this - what gives?

Could this be a new tax that became effective January 1st?

Fina, I hope you saved a copy of the e-mail that showed that the price you paid included all taxes.

This was announced in the Cozumel forum a month ago.

VAT on diving operators went from 11% to 16%. I'm sure Fina's account was paid in full as of her booking date, but the Mexican government is unlikely to look at as if she bought the trip and paid for it last year, they are much more likely to look at as if she took the trip this year, under the new tax code. It probably isn't worth hiring a lawyer for. But if it makes you feel better....
