I have taken all my test's OW,AOW,Rescue with open book and untimed. Then after we took the test we went over the answers and dicussed any wrong any wrong ones.
I have a new Instructor and he JUST got certifide(2weeks ago) and is telling me all NAUI test are close book and timed and you can fail. WTF? I want to get my nitrox but he is sounding like he is out to prove a point or something. This is the same guy that took his rescue and master diver home to take the test and then came in and got to check his own answers and still missed a few.

Just curious, why would you choose an instructor that's only been certified two weeks? Sure, *someone* has to be among his first students, but you?

Well I told him I would be his Guinnea Pig lol he is a friend of mine. It's just his attitude has changed.

I'm very sorry you have received a bad impression from this particular NAUI instructor. Most of us are nice folks!

I have no recollection of these rules as you've stated them. ...So I opened up my Standards and Policies Manual, and found this under Policies, 2.13:

Knowledge tests may be written or oral, open or closed book, in class or take-home. The results must be documented and retained. A master exam and key shall be retained with class records.

The requirement for a closed-book, timed test may be a personal one for this instructor, and is his right to structure his class as he sees fit, but there is no such "forced" NAUI requirement for non-leadership courses.

Hope this helps!

All the best, James

James is wise to go to the S&P, and his research is accurate. Instructors have the responsibility to assess students' knowledge and skills, and the academic freedom to do so in a way that makes sense for the students and courses that they teach.

I believe all scuba exams should be closed book, but not timed. Exams are there to test your knowledge on a particular subject and highlight your shortcoming (exam mistakes). This makes you a better "knowledgeable thinking diver" which is a vital skill in the practise of scuba.

Just my 2 cents.
