Does anyone know of any reasonably priced hotels near nadi (or not that far) where one can spend some time while waiting for a flight to LAX? I have around an eight hour layover after I arrive from Kadavu. A decent bar and maybe a beach would be nice. Thanks.

Sadly there are no decent beaches near the airport in Nadi; not in the time frame you have anyway.

A good place to spend a few hours is the Raffles Gateway Hotel, it is right outside the airport and has a lovely terrace pool and food/drinks etc.

I have a similar layover. I reserved a room at Raffles. Think it cost about $80.

Look around Nadi and you'll find some great cheap Indian food. After that, the best part of Nadi is seeing it get distant from your airplane window.

thanks for the responses. I"ll look into the raffles hotel. Tom, can you recommend any indian restaurant in particular? I love Indian food. WIll I be able to get to "downtown" Nadi from Raffles easily?

I just got back from Fiji on Sunday. We stayed at Tanoa International Hotel for our layover. We got decent day room rates. It was a very nice room, bar, restaurant, pool and easy to get a cab to go into town.

Wailoaloa beach is Nadi's only beach. It has several backpacker hostels there (think Thailand's Khao San Road) and so is cheap as chips (F$50 a night double room w/ ac), with beer and roxy young chicks aplenty. Aquarius is probably the nicest hostel there although the bar at Travellers Beach next door gets more punters.

The best Indian by far is called Ashiyana and it's 2 minutes out of Nadi.
The best Mexican is Lazy Cactus and it's in Martintar - 5 minutes.
The best Japanese is Daikoku and it's in Nadi.
The best Chinese is Coconut Inn and it's in Nadi.
The best bar is Hamburg Bar - Martintar.
The best Nightclub is Ed's Bar - Martintar.

For 'best' also read 'only'.

As far as accomodation The Mercure gets my vote - it's an Accor Hotel, newly refurbished and is in Martintar so close to all of the above and only 10 minutes from the airport. The Raffles is aight but not all that and do you really need to be opposite the airport?

To get from the Nadi airport area to Nadi town is easy. Many buses local run, it isn't far.

Not far north of the airport (opposite direction from town) is an orchid garden that is quite extensive. It used to belong to Raymond Burr the American actor. You could hire and a taxi and the driver will wait for you. the gardens are off the main road. They are worth a visit. I forget what the cost was exactly, but something like US$4 or so.

Don't forget your International departure tax, it used to be payable in Fiji Cash after check in just before your enter the departure lounge and duty free shop, though it may be included in some tickets. Be sure to ask if you need to pay it and how much it is.

I stayed at the Tanoa hotel for the day waiting for my LAX flight... it was about 50 bucks...

Sweet! Ricky, thanks for the info! I thought I would be deprived of Japanese and Chinese food!! Now, can you recommend a pizza place too? I'd be all set. Heading back in four days! =)
