No deep air threads allowed.

I dunno..... it depends on the intent, really.

Blatant trolls, yep agreed.

But I think in a like minded group there is some interesting discussion to be had here - provided it has good intent.

For example, I did my first trimix dives last weekend.... and am equally as paranoid at 50m on 18/45 as I am at 50m on air...... I always just thought that I was a paranoid narc, turns out I must just be paranoid.

Similarly, at 29m on nitrox I was no where as narc'd as one of my team mates who threw a complete wobbly when she "lost" her primary and both backups to our instructor... yet I was quite happy identifying, resolving and managing problems.

I think it's a really interesting question - what is an acceptable END? My team mate from last weekend is narc'd off her t!ts at 26m.... so is a 30m END too generous? Why am I still paranoid about gas and time at depth on trimix with an END of 26m, whilst functioning perfectly at 29m on a non-Helium mix.

I think there are some good discussions to be had.

Depends what we define as deep air. Things have become so PC that no one can have an END below 100'. When I first dove Eagles Nest,200ft on air was common place. Would I do that now,no way,but I will take air/nitrox mixtures deeper than 130'. I am all for discussions that don't glamorize risky dives (ie hate the chemical light society on CDF),but allowing a discussion so others can see risk/benefit. If this section of scubaboard is for the eye's of only "tech divers",then the restriction of the dissemination of information only weakens this board.

While I appreciate the thinking behind the suggestion, I have a bit of a different take on the topic.

Deep-Air should be a thing of the past, but it isn't. Allowing deep air threads to be here *MAY* help to educate those who still subscribe to the practice, or to those considering it.

The only reason I can figure out that people dive deep air here in the USA is $$. $$ for the gas and $$ for the training. Of course in places like Truk Lagoon where no helium is available, or astronomically expensive people easily justify deep air diving.

Over the years I have done my share of deep air dives, deeper than I care (or sometimes able) to remember. I recall the debilitating effects it had on my judgement and recall hallucinating on one extremely deep air dive. Deep air is a terrible alternative for deep diving.

Sharing these experiences is indeed a double edged sword, but hiding them or pretending they did not or do not exist is antithesis to a good learning process, especially for those who are considering deep air dives.

i'm all for allowing it here. where the OW crowd that did a bounce to 120 on the spiegel grove on a clear day can't chime in with their 'experience' and say it's fine.

What's the chemical light society? :dontknow:

That didnt take long.

Let it go as long as its reasonable discussion.

If I'm going somewhere that might go deep, but I'm not sure, air is a pretty good gas to go and see with... I've taken it deeper than 130', but I'm picky with when I'll do that. If I'm looking down a hole that I know is gonna go more than 110', I'm not bringing 32%, I'll bring air and go just a bit further to see whats going on... doesn't mean I'm gonna drop to 200', just gives me a bit more reach to see whats going on.

I'm not gonna bring Trimix to dive a cave thats at the 90' range(or shallower) just because it dips to 140' in a short area with lots of room.
