3 days ago I bought a brand new 37SS. Dove it yesterday and after the dive rinsed with fresh water but by the time I got home at night to properly clean it I noticed spots of rust all over the shell. I used a sponge/scouring pad with dawn detergent and had to use a hell of alot of elbow grease to get the rust spots off. I can understand this happening after prolonged use, but 3 days and 1 dive doesnt sound right.

well it looks like there is some sort of flaw in the metal. I contacted DSI and they are going to rectify the situation. However, it has made me reevaluate my choice on the shell. 4 days old, 1 dive, proper cleansing and continues to rust. Im on the fence of having them swap the SS shell for a fiberglass one. 70 people have viewed this and not one comment. Pretty surprising..

I can see that with a SS Pot you eliminate the threaded inserts for securing the port retainer to the shell and eliminate any refinishing that's needed if the shell gets damaged. It's also about a pound and a half lighter than a standard 37, but if you don't want the weight, why not use a 17 (4 pds. lighter than the 37SS)? What were the factors in-which you decided upon the 37SS? I guess we all have our favorites, but an old-timer's preferences are hard to argue with...

It does look like a nice hat. Like most pieces of diving equipment, you usually choose to use what you have confidence in. I'm sure you will be happy with your purchase once you get things squared away with the manufacturer. Take care.

Otter,
Get it replaced. Mine is doing fine with no rust. Its a great hat :)

The reason I chose the SS model is because a fair amount of my diving is ships husbandry, therefore Im usually smacking the shell on running gear or a hull. I liked the fact of not having to worry about fractures, reglassing etc etc. In my opinion it seemed more rugged and suitable for my type of diving. I will try to upload some photos as soon as possible. Beyond that the hat is great.

Otter,
I love the hat. Its rugged and looks good. The acoustics on the coms are not as good ("tinny") but my main concern was cold with high helium content, which has proved unfounded.

PS - "tinny" is the way I sound to the Supervisor. I hear just fine.
