Lets start out first by saying "Boy was it cold!"

It was approximately 62 degrees. We headed out 16 miles to our first reef. I was pleasantly surprised, the visability was great, around 60 feet.

Dive 1 - Max depth 57 feet and down for 41 min. The reef was amazing, as they all are. Not too many colors but plenty of life. Top of the ledge at around 40 feet and 57 on the bottom. My buddy found a fossilized manatee rib which was pretty interesting. On the 15 foot safety stop the water warmed up a few degrees and actually made it bareable. Next time I'll wear more than a 3mm.

After a short ride to our next dive spot which was about 14 miles offshore was my first wreck dive.

Dive 2 - There were a couple of barges that were sunk who knows when. Max depth 44 feet for 40 min this time. Unless you were along side one of the barges you'd never know it was a ship. On top swimming over it was totally covered. They were very open on the inside with lots of room above and ahead so we went in and swam through nice and slow mostly pulling our way through. That was the neatest part. As far as what I saw, tons of starfish, lizard fish, large sanddollars, tons of fish, sorry I'm not good on identifying them, I'm pretty sure some grouper and people above were fishing for king fish but I didn't see any, a frog fish, (I think is what he called it), it let you hold it if you were able to catch it, a sea cucumber, another type of slug purple with yellow spots, and a few large conchs! No sharks! No Barracuda! I wasn't a happy camper, or diver should I say, about that.

All in all it was a great day, the weather was perfect, the trip out calm and smooth. If anyone is coming to the Clearwater area I'd definitly recommend Captain Mac and Captain Jim. Very nice people and they had the best pineapple I've ever had, ever!

Glad you got to dive Mandy!!! Sounds like it was a fun one. 62 degrees in a 3 mil? You trying to prove you're tough? :)
Did you get to dive Nitrox??

Jeremy

Yeah sorry I forgot to put that. Both dives were on Nitrox. I even had to show my card at the LDS!! Set my computer right on the first try even! I think I might be getting this whole scuba thing down finally. And NO I'm definitely not tough. The 3mm was not enough. I had to make sure I was in the sun the entire time before our next dive with a towel wrapped around me and I still wasn't ready to get back in yet. Thankfully someone loaned me a hood, and I was kicking myself for not buying those gloves the night before at Mac's!

Good dive report. Sounds like is was a good learning experience. It's always nice to realize that you know more than you think you know when it comes time to need to know it.
How long was the boat ride out to the reef?
I'll never give up my 7mmFJ.....hate cold..brrr.
Any phone numbers for Captains Mac and Jim?
Glad you had a good time.

You were on the Mac Daddy? Nice boat and good people. :palmtree: Bob

Good to see people are diving in the Gulf. All we ever hear about is Keys diving. We have some great wrecks up here in the Panama City area too if you ever want to come up. Was this the fish you saw? Its a toad fish. They are all over the wrecks up here, though frankly, I wouldnt pick one up.

Ok the number for Captain Mac is 727-410-5551. Leave a message if he doesn't answer. They leave from Clearwater. I think it's Seminole Marina since it's off Ft. Harrison/Alt. 19 on Seminole St. The ride out went fast, I wouldn't say it was more than 30-45 min.

jviehe- how deep are the wrecks up in Panama? Ever see any sharks up there? I'm always looking for new places to dive and the wreck I was on wasn't that great. As far as the toad fish I thought I saw....it didn't look like that even though I can't really see it in that picture. The fish I saw had sides that stuck out flat that you could hold onto and 2 fins in the back that looked like he used as feet to push off the bottom. I thought he said it was a toad fish but I could be wrong.

Ok, it was a batfish then. I dont see as many of those, but they are usually around. The wrecks up here vary from 60ft to 100ft. Theres a few big ones too. I have seen some bullsharks on one of the bridgespans up here too.

on the Sandy Cay II? Been on that boat a couple of times, the pineapple sounds very familiar...
