Yeah, sounds like the "Torch" is an over kill... just use a small QL4 or 2 with some foam packing material in the front of the lens / after the bulb to diffuse it. When you say Torch, I'm thinking of those HID Canister lights... which would be Way overkill for a focus light. You have the strobe for the camera/Picture light and you're hitting it with both..
Drop the torch, use a small focus light and see if that works... attach it with plastic ties to your strobe arms, camera tray or anything else that you can secure it to and still move/point it in the right direction..
