The wing nut/compression washer (aka lock washer) combination works great for adjusting reel tension. That's what I used on both of my reels I made. On one reel's spindle, I end-tapped and installed a flathead screw to keep the wing nut from completely backing off. Be sure and put a stainless washer and nylon washer between the compression washer and the reel body to protect the reel from scoring.

I'll be posting some pics of the stainless steel back plates and keepers that I make in a couple of weeks.
