Aye, I know a nice big pond in between the US and GB!!

those thermoclines can be great if you dont mind the cold, we've had such a crap summer here that all the rains washed the muck off the hills into the lochs, it's kinda handy when you get the thermocline, can be kinda surreal underneath looking up which is fun too!
 
That's it exactly. Sometimes the particluate layer at the thermocline is compact and luminous, almost like a layer of light.

PS: Haven't been in that pond yet. Still mucking about over on the Pacific side.
