My wife was taking pictures a couple of days ago and I went to download them this morning...3/4 of them are black. I got the camera turned it on and black screen, menu settings, flash, everything else seems to work. Did she bite the big one?...

If you can get to the menu....try an "All-Reset".

Sorry i can't be of any more help. If that doesn't work, sounds like a trip to Oly!

Dave

I've done a "soft reset,” but not sure what happens with a "hard reset" (is that the same as "all reset"), so I haven't attempted it. I put in an email to Oly to see what they think. I figured with as many 5050 users there appears on here, that maybe someone would have experienced this and could let me know what I’m in for.

U can not make it worst by trying things. A hard reset will result in the camera ending up in the mode it was in when shipped, date returned to default ect... but worth tying.

I can no comment exactly except to suggest that anything that get's the camera functionng is worth a try.

Heheh.. this is sounding like a switch or setting or something that got tripped by mistake..
I'd do the reset all and see if that works...
(not funny if serious, but sounds like something I'd do...)
Like pressing the screen or took the photos in a different mode..

Hope I'm right and it fixes on a "Reset"...
Good luck and post the problem...

Tried it... No changes, other then those expected; date, personalized settings, etc. It’s not looking good :death2:

Ouch...
Well, then, just contact them with a description and they'll take a look at it...
I had one go out, 3030.. but could still see the screen. One sensor went out or something like that.. look like a photo take from a venitian blinds.. Horizontal lines going through the photo... got it replaced/upgraded. 5050 is still current in the "Repair" world, so you should have it fixed ok.. After a while they stop repairing them and either offer a refurbished or an upgrade "for a few dollars more..."...

Would be interesed, for future reference, on what the damage was...

Sorry to hear of it, bummer to say the least..
Also, as an FYI and as you've probably realized by now... the Housing.. if the camera is Ka-putt.... the housing is too, unless you have a back up camera... depending upon the housing, OLY015? then not so bad, get a new one with the new camera, but if an expensive housing, read L&M Tetra, then consider getting a back up camera for the times they can't/won't fix/replace it..
Just a thought.. Good luck on the repairs... and keep it posted

FWIW, the Olympus repair center in California has a very fast turn around time. I had to send my 5050 in to get the monitor screen replaced and they had it back changed in a day and back on UPS. It arrived at my house a week all fixed a week before the letter requesting authorization to fix it. They have a flat fee for fixing the camera, $179 (ouch) but still cheaper than trying to find a used one.

That's good to hear as there have been some past posts that didn't feel that way... were sending to New York, the lesser of two evils...

I had a good experience withe the Lads in New York, but like everything, it can change.. so the Calif news is good.. will look forward to hearing some more from others...

Heheh.. I guess the best situation is that we never hear from any one on the service centers... as in we don't need them... everything works fine.. LOL... yes I still believe...

I have a "possible" advantage...I'm in Okinawa Japan. I say possible because some things over this way can sometimes be a LOT more expensive. I'm thinking CCD quit but I'm no expert. I haven't heard back from Olympus as of yet; I'll let you all know how it works out.
