I'm heading to Roatan for a week in December. Are there any must do dives that I should look into while I'm there?

Thanks,
Jim

Spooky Channel on the north side, Mary's Place on the south. Texas was a good NW dive also.
The Waihuku Shark dive - book thru your diveop. And the Dolphin dive at AKR.

It largely depends on where you are staying as to what dives you will have access to dive. Where would that be and who will you be diving with?

"Must Do" lists from any source are always a bit of a snicker.

Understand one thing about Roatan: The single unique feature, available no-where else in the Caribbean, is a shallow vertical Sunlit wall that runs from French Key to Oak Ridge on the South side. I would concentrate on that, but you can only do this from three AI's that are located along that shoreline area, others do not get there.

I'll be staying at Henry Morgan's, but I don't know off hand who the dive op is. My LDS has been arranging that for us, but we were told we could request specific dives.

Nice list of dive sites, Are these what you feel are "must do" dives? I do not see Josie on there, but that would be advanced. Maybe you could help the original poster out and elaborate a bit as to why and what to expect. I see the little deeper wreck is not listed? Is it just a depth thing or do you not feel it is worth it?

Henry Morgan is here http://www.roatanmarinepark.com/map/ located just above the far Western tip, and just offshore lies the dive site labeled as Temptation Reef.

Henry Morgan will have a fairly standard set of dive sites that they service and are familiar with, as does every other dive operation on this planet.

Make of the dives what you will. Many divers absolutely gush about Mary's Place, but likely it is because it represents a massive, different looking structure from the rest of the dives. The same reason that "wreck" dives are appealing... it gives the diver something to look at.

Better than "looking at shapes and structures", ask and follow your DM as the search for and locate the delightful critters that lurk and hide in plain sight on the reef. These are more prevalent on the South side, as in my first response to you, but a good, skilled DM will be showing you cool stuff you would otherwise likely drift right by.

The first 3 dives will be spent in sorting you and your fellow divers out to decide different diving abilities. If your dive leader resists this and insists that everyone be placed on the same boat, or if he makes that division along lines of friendship- well, here's your sign. At HMR you might be restricted in this regard as they seem to show only one 30 pax boat.

Dives #5 and #10 in that list are particularly deep, altho the entire area is fairly similar. I think Will's list is a good one for a group that has already selected Henry Morgan's resort, for many reasons including the physical location of the resort.

Here are TGI's (the resident dive op) listed dive locations: DIVE SITES - TGI Diving int

There is a morning boat with 2 tanks and a 1 tank afternoon boat, having a diver capacity of 30 people and a bottom time limited to 45~50 minutes.

As you can see, there is no description and limited photos of the dive boats. It is, essentially, a resort popular among European visitors, and it is a resort that offers diving, not a dive resort, per-se. Read this Q&A - TGI Diving int and you will likely draw the same conclusion.

Go, relax, dive and have fun. Learn something cool from your DM's. Don't scratch the sand flea bites. ;)

We enjoyed every dive, something new at each one. A lot of people talk about Mary's Place and Calvin's Crack. We did them both and they were unique. I liked Mary's Place better. Both are basically a channel or crack in the wall that you swim through....simply something different.

Do a night dive. This was my favorite dive. Awesome critters out at night.

A couple on our boat did the shark dive and loved it.

Another couple snorkeled with the dolphins and absolutely loved it. They actually didn't do the tour, but had some connections and snorkeled outside the area where the dolphins were, but enjoyed the dolphins coming up to them as well.

If you enjoy the zip-lining, my son and I did the Pirate Zip Line. It was okay, but if we were doing it again we would do the other one (not sure it's name). I thought the Pirate one was a little pricy for what it was and not as extreme as I thought it would be.

I just came back from a rainy week in Roatan and the dives from that list I did were West End Wall and Blue Channel. I did West End Wall twice with different guides and they may as well have been 2 different dives! Blue Channel was cool, with swim throughs and such. One of my last dives was a lovely wall going down to oblivion... it was either Pirates Cove or Flowers Bay Wall "2." Saw a rare white seahorse at Pablos. Seems to me you can't really lose whatever you do. But I'm a new diver so everything seems AWESOME to me.
