I am heading to Munising next week. Has anyone dove on the Smith Moore lately? I have heard that the shifting sands are an issue and was wondering how much of the wreck is exposed.

I was up there on it two weeks ago and it is a fantastic dive. The lake side has about 5 feet of the hull exposed and the inshore side is up to the deck with sand. The bow and most of the stern is exposed as well as the top of the engines... of course the boiler and the superstructure is intact. It is a great dive. Have fun!

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to it. My daughter was wondering what the water temp is @ depth.

Well, when I was on it last year it was a balmy 58 degrees or so. But that was late in the season and the lake was turning. I think it's usually in the 42 degree range which is what I've had on it before. Rich?

It was 39 degrees when we went.... great thermocline though it was 55 on the surfa.ce.

She will be cold, but she will survive;). Have either one of you dove on the Steven Selvic lately? I have heard that the current & other environmental factors are starting to affect it.

I did the Selvick last year and it was in fine shape. Granted it was the only time I've been on it but I loved it. I remember hearing it was moved around a little by winter weather but don't know for a fact. I did a story on Munising Diving for Alert Diver, Spring 2010 if you can find a copy. I really enjoyed diving the Selvick. You descend on the stern and find her on her port side. You can follow the deck to the pilot house and circle it clockwise. Or head straight to the exposed prop which makes a great photo, and then head up the starboard side to the pilot house. Either way, it's not deep and it's a small wreck so you can spend lots of time on it..

It's gonna be a long week @ work this week.
