Continental will get me there. But, I would need to travel from Minneapolis through Toronto to Cozumel. Does that mean I would need to allow a couple hours at both Canada and US immigration?

If you are currently in the US, then you would clear customs in Canada and then again in Cozumel on the way down. On the way back, you'd clear in Canada and again in the US. But you'd clear quickly in Canada, just as I do when I fly from Canada to some other destination via Minneapolis.

Why aren't you going through IAH with CO to CZM? How did you get a routing via YYZ? Going north to go south seems like a waste of travel time.

For international passengers in transit I'm not sure you do have to clear Canadian customs. To be sure, I'd contact CO directly and ask. Possibly if your flights arrive and depart in different terminals you would have to clear, if not, I don't think so. You'd just follow the signs for international passengers in transit. If I remember correctly, you'd have to be arriving and departing in Terminal 1 for this to apply.

Yes, it makes no sense but that is what I get with my frequent flyer miles.

Now it makes sense. CO used to be so user friendly for miles upgrades and reward travel. Now with UA they seem to have adopted the UA policies I didn't like - few seats, $150pp each way fee for upgrades w/ miles, etc. The thought of having to go back to flying coach or booking a gazillion months in advance and using miles for whole ticket is not appealing.

Do check directly with CO, but I'm pretty sure that transiting to an international flight (no overnight or anything, right?) if both flights are in T1 in YYZ then you will probably skip Canadian Customs.

I thought it was only in the US that passengers in transit actually have to clear immigration? Everywhere else I've been they have a kind of secure transit lounge so you never actually officially enter the country, so don't have to do immigration, or the whole dance of grabbing your luggage, hauling it through the customs desk and then dumping it on a conveyor belt 10 feet away! I could be wrong though, I guess it might depend on whether or not you have to change terminals in Toronto.

There are some good buys to Cozumel from MSP. If you package it with a room the flights can get even less expensive. You might find it isn't worth using your miles for a trip if the flights are cheap without using miles and the schedule is better. It will all depend on your dates of travel.
