Despite the bleak picture awap is trying hard to paint, there are several very interesting dives within an hour to hour and a half drive of Ft Worth. These include:

Possum Kingdom - 80-90 miles west, boat needed
Clear Springs Scuba Park - 60-70 miles east
Lake Murray - 80 miles north
Lake Broken Bow - 200 miles northeast (okay, three hours)
Lake Travis - 200 miles south (three hours)
Valhalla Missile Silo - I don't know the distance offhand

All of these have compelling dives. Some of them have decent visibility, especially in the cold months. If you're looking for crystal clear warm water with colorful fish then you could be in for a lot of travel time and expense. I don't recall that being in your original post however. Welcome to Texas!

Also you can add to that list Stillhouse Hollow Lake in Belton, about 120 miles or so south near Waco. I have been there a couple of times and enjoy it.

Not to mention all of those swamps in the Houston area: Blue Lagoon, Mammoth (full of stuff to look at I hear), 288, etc, etc...

Thanks for all of the info posted. Having originated in Michigan and doing lots of diving in quarries, while I love the warm water and fishes in Florida I don't object to other kinds of diving and as a matter of fact enjoy all of them, including cold water dry suit diving.

You're in luck. It so happens that the cold drysuit diving coincides with the best visibility of the year. I've seen 40' visibility in the dead of winter and enough ambient light that you don't need a light until you hit 60 feet.

Hi all,
I will be moving to the Fort Worth area in a couple of weeks and am looking for info on dive shops and locations. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Fort Worth shop: Lone Star Scuba

DFW area local diving: Clear Springs Scuba Park (east of Dallas) or Lake Murray just north into Oklahoma a few hours.

Arlington dive shop: Tiger Shark Scuba

zzzKing,
I think we are kindred spirits. Let's go dive Murray in December or January. What say you?

Nothing like CSSP in February/March. Great vis (20 -30 ft), but my computer has shown 42 degrees a couple of times. The Pinnacle Evo 2 gets a workout from December through March.

I will second Scuba Sphere. They are SSI, and it is kind of a family affair. Robbie and his wife Cindy run the store. Brian also works there and all three will help with anything you need. it is a small shop but very friendly. they love to just talk with customers about diving.
