The water off of Morehead and Beaufort will be warmer than off of Hatteras. Most of the wrecks out of Beaufort Inlet will have sharks on them.

For the ones that don't dive, there is Fort Macon, a civil war fort that has been restored on Atlantic Beach. The Maritime Museum in Beaufort has a lot of history of ships and has a Blackbeard exhibit. The NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores will let the non-divers experience what you get to see. These are just a few things that can be done in addition to diving.

diveonthefive...I think I might have met you before? Not sure...You kind of look familiar though:D

Go with Morehead City/Beaufort...Hatteras can be "iffy" regarding water temps. MC/Beaufort will have more consistent conditions. Not knocking Hatteras at all. Great wrecks.

I"m planning on doing some diving in NC, this summer and starting to work out my travel plans... My top priority is seeing sharks. All things being equal, I'd prefer to do that in warm water with good vis and little current (if only I had a magic wand). After sharks, seeing cool and/or historic wrecks would be nice, but that is second to sharks at this point I think...
Ahh, let's see now. SHARKS. Historic shipwrecks. Other stuff to do. Hmmm, I couldn't imagine WHY you would want to go to Hatteras... Then there's those "iffy" water temps, somewhere between 75 and 80 degrees all summer. Yep, that's rough.

Look, if you like laying on the beach, surfing or playing in the water when you aren't diving, Hatteras is the place. Has a nice shipwreck museum, too, if I could ever get in the damn thing... Just one warning. Locals are, well, LOCALS. No matter how much you tip the waitresses in the local breakfast joints, they still treat you BAD.

Here's some video... ENJOY!

What you trying to say, that there are a few Sharks in Hatteras? And those pesky wrecks getting in the way.
Nice Vid Andy.
And remember that waitress had to put up with Kent.

That was a nice video. Think I'd be a little scared if it were coming right at me like that. How do you know if it's going to turn away or decide on photographer for lunch?

I'm hoping to get to down there this summer for a week.

They always turn away........

except when they don't

Just something to think about as you head down the anchor line towards the wreck.....

After a few dives you won't think twice about the sandtigers unless you are waving wounded fish around. The other sharks (NST's or not sand tigers) are the ones I keep an eye on. The ones lurking just out of sight are the ones that make me pee my wetsuit.

When we 1st hit the water on the Proteus we had a nice escort down, we actually almost landed on it.

I had the same experience on the Proteus. Looking down the decent line toward the wreck, the shark swam a few feet under my fins.........! Absolutely spectacular. t

If you are a photographer and want the head on shot, they will turn away. If you don't have your camera, they will keep coming at you.

LOL...that's the damn truth.

Im from eastern NC, and Olympus Dive Center is my home/favorite charter, excellent operation, however OBX dive center in kill devil hills is a great opporation too. I can attest to this because I have friends on both crews. The main difference you will see int he diving, is in OBX the currents/conditions/vis can change in minutes. We were diving the U-87 and our first dive had vis of ts dive ~4 feet, 2nd dive 30+, its nuts, and exciting stuff. Morehead has more opportunities for large animal encounters such as sand tiger sharks. I feel Olympus is more accepting of spearfishing as well, they have a boat license so even if your out of state you are covered by their fishing license. anyways just some thoughts.
