I hate to be the bearer of grim and tragic news, but tragedy did strike a family visiting Cozumel for the day on Tuesday. Hopefully this story will prevent at least a handful of you from even considering renting a moped during your visit to Cozumel. This story just illustrates what can and does happen all the time here in Cozumel.

I heard about this yesterday, and then read it on another Cozumel related board (Cozumel My Cozumel) today. Please rent four wheels and not two if you must rent transportation.

As reported by por Esto and translated by Carey Sutton:

This is a cautionary tale reported in yesterday's Por Esto by Rafael Acevedo Alvar. Sorry to be so grim but those of us who live here full-time see so many bad accidents with mopeds and feel it is our duty to remind some visitors that they are not on the bumper cars at the state fair when they hop on a moped here.

A foreign tourist , Susan Pruss, 49, a cruise passenger from Appleton, Wisconsin driving a rented moped was run over by a dump truck yesterday. She was run over by the rear left tire provoking instantaneous death.

Imprudence and lack of precaution in driving coupled with having no experience driving a moped have caused many tourists to have accidents--some like this one--with particularly lamentable consequences.

On this occasion, the accident occurred a few meters from the Reef Club where the deceased was taking part in a group moped tour to the southern end of the island. Pross was attempting to pass the dump truck when the rear left wheel hit her, passing over her abdomen.

Upon seeing this, the driver of the heavy truck advanced some meters, stopped, jumped out and took flight.

At approximately 4 PM on Tuesday, police arrived at the scene the scene, reports were filed with the criminal court and the body, which was almost completely destroyed from the waist down was removed.

A car is a better choice but if you must rent a moped, remember #1. The wheelbase is a lot different than on a US motorcycle #2. Be ESPECIALLY careful! This is a great island. But it's also not Disneyland. Use common sense!

So sad.

I agree with Christy, that they are not on the bumper cars at the state fair when they hop on a moped here. Saw the results of a crash in October, no deaths but some pretty nasty road rashes. And then you see tourists on mopeds with flip-flops and no helmets. I'm surprised that there aren't more accidents.

Very sad news. My condolences to the family. I'm with Christi... I wouldn't even consider renting a moped while visiting Cozumel. A cab ride can be scary enough.

very sad. Exactly the reason I tell anyone thinking of going to Coz or on their way to not rent mopeds.

Americans seem to think that they are in America when they go travel foreign countries, amazing? So sad.........

Anywhere I have ever been with a high amount of moped rentals is usually accompanied by the annoying high pitched sound of their engines and ambulance sirens. I prefer to walk, take a cab or bus. My condolences to the families.

I think this good advice could be applied to many different holiday destinations. It does sound like a lot of fun but as Shaka says, it isn't like North America...

It would be nice if the original post in this thread were made a sticky for all to see.

I agree whole-heartedly with what Christi posted regarding mopeds. If heeding her advice would keep Scubaboard members traveling to Cozumel from making a deadly mistake, it would be worth the effort to keep this thread where all can see.

I think the advice should be more along the lines of "unless you drive a motorbike frequently and have experience driving all over the world, don't rent a moped".

The real problem seems to be more middle aged people that haven't been on anything with 2 wheels since being a teen getting on a moped while on vacation

Great advice Christi and cerich. I regularly drive my motorcycle to work and through heavy traffic, but driving a moped around Coz made me wish for rush hour traffic on I-95. While mopeds can be a great way to get around for experienced riders, they are not a way to sightsee given the lack of power and maneuverability they have combined with what I can only call “unusual” traffic and driving customs.
