i hear that the city of monterey is considering putting a new wreck in the bay. i think that would be kind cool myself, i mean lets face it, there's already how much pipe down there? and it's kinda fished out down there as well so a little artificial reef structure could only help things yes? as long as all fuel and oil and all other bad stuff is removed before the ship is sunk-no problemo right? what do folks think about it?

I have mixed feelings about it quite personally, although I am pretty much 90% for it. Just so long as it is done properly - that is my primary concern. My other concern is just about safety. But again, 90% sure. :)

The Northern California Oceans Foundation is looking to put down several
of the Navy's mothball fleet in Suisun Bay. I'm the site investigation chair.
http://www.oceansfoundation.org/ for details.

What can you do to help? Jawbone the motels and restaurants.
The Yukon has brought millions of $$$ to San Diego. The Monterey
tourist biz is pretty much just the summer, but diving is year-round.
Some cool wrecks will help fill motel rooms and restaurants in the
spring and fall, and a bit in the winter.

Would definitely help. Are there any organized efforts for talking to the various 'powers that [think they] be'?
