My son and I are going to Monterey the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd...

Was wondering if anyone would be interested in buddying with us, since we're both newbies...I'm newly certified in Monterey; my son (13) has about 10 warm water dives.

I do not want to buddy with my son...we're both too new...and I'm too much of a Mom :11:

Are you planning to shore dive or boat dive?

Well...shore dive?...cuz I've never done a boat dive? And if I wanted to, I'm not sure how I would go about it???

Told ya I was a newbie! ;)

i'll probably been diving down there on the saturday, but we're talking about a boat dive, if we end up doing a shore dive i'll send you a pm a few days in advance, however, we usually dive monastery, which can be pretty tricky...especially the beach entry and exit, and if your son isn't used to diving in a wetsuit it might be to much, that siad i dove south monastery on my first dive after certification, it's the north end of the beach that can get ya mostly!!

I wouldn't recommend that Monastery be the first cold water experience for anyone, let alone a newly certified 13 year old.

You would be better off going down to the Breakwall and doing your dives there. Most of the local shops offer guide services for a fee or you can try and strike up some conversation with fellow divers at Breakwall (there's hundreds of us there every weekend) to see if they'll be comfortable if you and your son dive with them.

I would come down myself, but I'll be in Cozumel that weekend. ;)

I dove there last weekend again and it is still a nice fun dive. The entry is very easy and there is plenty of sealife to stare at. I would say it would probably be the best site for someone still getting their feet wet. ;)

Have fun,

very true...missed the 13 bit...it can be tough enough to take the waves there when fully grown, let alone when 13...but i did say that it was tough..if my plans fall through and i'm not diving with anyone else i'll go diving in breakwater with you, the wall there is a good dive...go out along it , turn around and come back in shallower, that way you can't get lost and see new things on both trips!!

Thanks all...

We'll be down at the breakwater Saturday...called my LDS and they have AOW classes going on and the instructor said he could take us out in the afternoon...I'd like to dive in the morning too but don't know it I should dive with my son without anyone else...

Sunday, we're hooked up with the Monterey Express for my first boat dive...kinda nervous...don't know what to expect...

Would love to meet up with any SB members in the area Sat morning...That's why I took this sport up...to have fun and meet new people!

So you'll be diving with Andy on the Monterey Express, excellent, is that who certified you? On Sat when you're at the Breakwater be sure to practice doing slow ascents and hovering at 15 ft for the 3 min safety stop for the boat dive:-) There's nowhere shallow to swim to like a beach dive so you have to come straight up. Are you going on his Channel Islands trip?

Yes, Andy's Scuba World...Barry was my instructor and Jeff Murphy was my OW instructor for my 4 dives...Great guys...

Don't know about the Channel Islands trip...Barry was telling me about it, but with my daughter returning from a trip to D.C. and then my son leaving for Yosemite all during that weekend, it will be too much of a headache to get a sitter with all the comings and goings...Do you know when the next trip is? I'd like to plan for that one...with notice I can farm them out to friends :11:

FYI...I'm taking them to Cancun in July...hope to get as much diving in here before we go!
